This role is primarily based at our headquarters in the Innovation Depot in downtown Birmingham. Depending on the position, work may involve hands-on time in our hydroponic R&D lab, participation in farmers market events, or collaboration across digital and physical systems.

As a startup, our environment is fast-paced, evolving, and highly collaborative. Team members should be comfortable with shifting priorities, physical activity (standing, lifting, bending, etc.), and working with tools, technology, or plant systems in various stages of development.

About the Role

Objectives of this Role
Design and refine CEA systems including environmental controls, hydroponic layouts, energy, and water systems.


Integrate engineering principles into the development of modular, high-efficiency farm units.


Support R&D, prototyping, and validation efforts for farm technology improvements.


Ensure systems meet compliance, safety, and sustainability standards.



Responsibilities
Lead or support the design of hydroponic systems, nutrient delivery, HVAC, lighting, and automation for vertical farms and greenhouses.


Create system documentation including CAD drawings, component specs, and performance modeling.


Collaborate with engineers, architects, and farm operations teams to align technology with usability and budget.


Conduct field research and data analysis to improve system performance.


Assist with vendor sourcing, prototyping, and pilot project implementation.


Stay up-to-date on CEA technology trends and best practices.

Requirements

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biosystems, Agricultural, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering.

  • 3+ years of experience designing or implementing CEA, hydroponic, aquaponic, or greenhouse systems.

  • Strong understanding of HVAC, water treatment, sensors, and automation in an ag context.

  • Proficiency with CAD and engineering design tools.

  • Passion for sustainability, food systems, and applied innovation.



Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Familiarity with ASABE, LEED, or related sustainability frameworks.

  • Experience in startup, research, or multi-disciplinary design environments.

  • Ability to lead design reviews and contribute to cross-functional decision-making.


Benefits

  • Salary Range: $100,000 – $110,000 annually, depending on experience

  • Employment Type: Full-time
