EARTH | Avondale Mills, Sylacauga

Avondale Mills was once where people came to work, learn, and grow. It anchored a local economy and gave generations a path forward. When production ceased in 2006—and again when fire struck the Eva Jane plant in 2011—the loss left a visible fracture in Sylacauga’s identity.

Regenerating this hometown landmark is at the heart of Shipshape AgWorks’ mission.

In partnership with EARTH (East Alabama Rural Innovation and Training Hub), we’re transforming this historic site into a Hybrid Agricultural Base (HAB)—a living system for food, learning, and climate resilience. Here, AI-integrated hydroponics, adaptive greenhouse cultivation, and mycological bio-innovation work together within a renewable-energy loop and closed-water cycle to model truly regenerative infrastructure.

What was once a textile mill is becoming a regional engine for vertical farming, workforce development, and sustainable technology—engineered with care, precision, and place-awareness.
The legacy of Avondale Mills lives on through the people restoring it, the systems taking shape inside it, and the vision guiding its return to public life.

Avondale Mills helped shape Sylacauga’s past. Now it’s shaping the future.
We’re proud to grow here—and proud to grow what’s next.
